Drink and Drug Driving
Theory Test

Learner drivers often receive minimal education on the dangers of alcohol and drugs in relation to driving, both from their instructors and the official Theory Test.
To bridge this critical gap, the Drink and Drug Driving Theory Test has been developed as an educational tool to provide essential information on the effects of alcohol and drugs on the body, their impact on driving safety, and the legal consequences of impaired driving. This initiative is designed to ensure that learners are better equipped to make informed, responsible decisions before passing the driving test.
Part 1: Education on Drink Driving and Drug Driving
The Drink and Drug Driving Theory Test forms a vital component of the Getting Ready for the Road program. It goes beyond the basics by addressing two distinct yet interrelated areas:
1. Drink Driving Education
- Comprehensive insights into how alcohol affects reaction times, decision-making, and overall driving ability.
- Detailed explanations of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limits, how they are calculated, and the penalties for exceeding them.
- Real-life scenarios illustrating the dangers of drink driving, supported by statistics and case studies.
2. Drug Driving Education
- An overview of the physical and cognitive effects of both prescription and recreational drugs on driving performance.
- Education on how legal medications can impair driving and the importance of checking with healthcare providers.
- A breakdown of drug-driving laws, including testing methods and penalties for offenders.
The test aims to create a strong foundation of knowledge that learner drivers can apply during their driving lessons, official Theory Test, and everyday driving practices.
Part 2: Testing and Certification
The theory test is conducted by qualified driving instructors who integrate it into their lesson plans or administer it following the learner’s driving test. This ensures the information is contextualized within the learner’s broader road safety education.
Upon successfully completing the test, learners are awarded a Certificate of Completion. This certificate serves as:
- Proof of Knowledge: Demonstrates the learner's understanding of the crucial safety principles related to drink and drug driving.
- An Incentive: Encourages engagement with the program, knowing that the certificate may positively influence outcomes like insurance applications.
- A Valuable Credential: The certificate may be presented to insurance providers as a testament to the learner’s commitment to safe and responsible driving, potentially leading to incentives or reduced premiums.
Integration with the Official Driving Test
The Drink and Drug Driving Theory Test is designed to complement the official Theory Test and the practical driving test. It can be taken either during the driver training process or upon its completion, ensuring flexibility for both instructors and learners.
Long-Term Impact
This initiative aspires to cultivate safer roads by equipping future drivers with the knowledge and mindset to avoid the risks associated with alcohol and drug impairment. It also reflects a broader commitment to proactive road safety education, bridging gaps that traditional methods have left unaddressed.
